Police Scotland reiterated that e-scooters are illegal for use in public places after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was photographed riding one during a campaign visit to Troon.

Although e-scooters can be legally purchased, it is against the law to ride a privately-owned e-scooter in public areas in the UK.

E-scooters are currently classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs) and are subject to the same legal requirements as motor vehicles, including insurance, a valid driving license, and compliance with construction and use requirements.
