Gary Saville, a high school teacher in Metro Vancouver, enjoys riding his electric unicycle around the city, despite the risk of getting ticketed.

He believes people are fascinated by the futuristic appearance of the vehicle. Electric unicycles and other micromobility devices, such as e-scooters and e-skateboards, are gaining popularity, but they currently operate outside the law in British Columbia.

The Motor Vehicle Act does not recognize these devices, classifying them as "unauthorized vehicles." Lawyer David Hay suggests the law needs to adapt to the evolving technology.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure plans to introduce regulations to approve micromobility pilot projects in communities later this year, aiming to determine the safest use of these devices on the road.

”For shorter trips around downtown Vancouver shopping and walking his dog, Saville said his electric unicycle has changed his relationship to the city. Saville doesn’t own a car but also has a bicycle he often rides.”
