Ageless E-Scooter Renegade: Tom's York Adventures

An 82-year-old man in York, who suffers from arthritis, uses an illegal battery-powered two-wheel scooter to stay active and avoid walking long distances.

Although he knows the scooter is illegal and could result in penalties, he feels that it suits his active lifestyle better than a mobility scooter.

He has only been stopped by the police once and believes that he is no more of a threat than someone on an electric bike or a mobility scooter.

The man hopes that the e-scooter hire trial in York is a step forward, but is concerned about the cost.

He calls for parliament to legalize scooters like his so that he can enjoy the outdoors without fear of legal consequences.

“…he was feeling isolated at the end of the lockdown and wanted to get out in the fresh air. He suffers from arthritis in his knee and after less than half a mile he is in agony.”
